Devkund or the “Jewel of Tamhini” is a waterfall located near Bhira (110 kms from Pune) in Raigad district. It is said to be the origin of the Kundalika river and is located deep within the forests surrounding Bhira. The trail begins at the Bhira Hydroelectric project alongside the dam’s reservoir. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the waterfall meandering through lush green meadows, thick forests and streams.
I usually enjoy trekking with some vigor, however on this instance I was slow and biding my time. Through the falling rain, moments of quiet introspection dawned on me, while the misty mountains kept company.
I was snapped to reality as I had to cross a stream, wading waist high, icy cold water. Slipping over grimy rocks and hoping my cellphone wouldn’t drown. This was the beginning of monsoon and I was glad to have made it, as the authorities would eventually close the trail owing to higher water levels. That meant you could never reach the waterfall without crossing this particular stream.
The scenery changed almost instantly, trudging through dense forests and an uphill climb. Human chains were formed and the crowning jewel was revealed!
